IMPORTANT: because of the Covid-19 restrictions, this class is postponed until spring 2020. Expressions of interest very welcome. Please stay home and stay safe!
Welcome to the Sharrahim troupe. If you are looking for a more genuine Middle Eastern dance experience, this is the class for you. In partnership with Shayne at Essential Rhythms, this is for both dancers and drummers to learn and deeply connect with the musicality of Arabic drumming & dancing.
This class will run every Thursday evening in Yackandandah. You can join at any time. Here are the dates for 2020:
Sep 3, 10, 17 & 24
Oct 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29
Nov 5, 12, 19 & 26
Dec 3 & 10
(2021) Jan 21 & 28
Feb 4, 11, 18 & 25
Every week, drummers and dancers will:
- start with separate instruction with either Sam (for dancing) or Shayne (for drumming) so students can learn specific technique for their art.
- have a combined session with Sam demonstrating how to dance to live drums and Shayne teaching how to drum for dancers.
- finish with a free style drum & dance session.
The more classes you attend, the more quickly you can expect to develop your skills. Every March, our troupe will perform at the Yackandandah Folk Festival as well as other Yack events throughout the year.
WHAT TO WEAR
DANCERS: it's best to wear comfortable pants and a top, like yoga pants or leggings and a tshirt or singlet. You don't have to bare your belly unless you want to! We dance barefoot or you can wear soft shoes, like jiffies. I'll provide any bellydancing equipment you need.
DRUMMERS: it's best to wear pants so you can put a drum between your knees and tops where you can push sleeves back from the wrist. Shayne provides drums to use in class, or you can bring your own.
You should also bring a water bottle to class.
When you enrol, I'll send you a confirmation email. I'll also add you to my mailing list so you get reminders and updates. You can also follow Essential Rhythms on Facebook.
These classes are casual attendance, so there is no need to pre-pay for the season. Please bring cash to pay at the door for each class you attend, or I can send you bank details if you prefer to direct deposit.
